How to Repair a Dead Car Key

If your car keys get damaged, it's a real problem. It always happens at the worst possible time! There are a few ways to fix a broken car key that don't involve paying for the purchase of a new key.
Dead Key Fob Batteries
Modern key fobs let us open doors, trunks, and tailgates without the need to search for a physical car key. Some key fobs even come with a built-in key that can be used to start cars. However, these key fobs depend on a small battery that powers their remote functions. If the battery dies then the key fob will not be able to transmit the signal needed to turn on the vehicle. Luckily, there are several ways you can repair the problem and get your car operating again.
First, try to find out if your key fob is in fact dead. If it appears to be, then you'll have to replace the battery. You can do this yourself by taking the key fob off its clip or using a small flat head screwdriver to pry it apart. Be careful not to apply too much pressure or you may damage the fob. Since the majority of key fobs are RFID (radio-frequency identification) they only function at a short distance and must be within a certain distance for the ignition system to recognize the signal. Broken Key Ring
The internal chip in the key fob is what communicates to your car's immobilizer in order to start the motor. This chip can be damaged or there may be programming mistakes. A malfunctioning transponder could be caused by physical damage to the key shell, or wear and tear on the contact pads.
Often, when the key fob begins to struggle with the vehicle's immobilizer system, you will see specific warning signs on the dashboard. These can include errors messages, a flashing light or the key not locking or unlocking the vehicle. If you see these warnings, contact your local locksmith immediately to request a replacement key fob or repair.
If you carry a lot of keys, it is easy to scratch the key ring. This could cause the key fob to split in half, which is one of the most frequent causes of broken car keys. If this happens, try using super glue to fix it by applying a small amount the glue to both sides of the split and carefully pressing them together. It is essential to use a gel-type glue that is slow drying to avoid drips or runniness.

Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keysfobs fell off the small key ring that is at the top, which is where it joins the keyfob. It's believed to be made of very soft metal or plastic. I've drilled the hole and wet-sanded the area to make it more durable. But I suspect that's not helping.
I've also attempted to wrap the broken part of ring with clear tape but it didn't look as good. It's a shame because I use the tiny split ring to keep my keys in place.
